I wrote a memo yesterday at work. I rarely talk about my work. You can get in trouble for that sort of thing.¹
So, I wrote this memo. It began like this, “…claims for missing items are eating our lunch…” Not one of my employees, who range greatly in age, gender²,³ and geographic origin, has heard this saying.
Have you?*
¹ I probably wouldn’t get in trouble but why take the chance. My dog likes to eat well.
² we have four
³ I’m trying to be inclusive since June is Gay and Lesbian Pride Month and I like rainbows
* I even googled and couldn’t find the saying.
Oh yeah Pride Month...I wonder why it is only one month. I have pride year round...go figure. LOL at the note...too funny. The possibilities are endless for the Have you?
ReplyDeleteu r wise,
ReplyDeletethat's a smart move in writing, especially publicly...
Happy Saturday!
yeah, and i dont like it when people eat my lunch...
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I don't understand ;p. It's the first time ever I read about the saying. Have a wonderful weekend, Nessa.
ReplyDeleteI've heard the phrase but it usually meant getting stomped or gored by cattle. As in "That bull ate Doug's lunch. Go check if he's breathing. After lunch."
ReplyDeleteI've always heard it used that if something "ate your lunch" it really gave you a rough time.
ReplyDeleteWho's been eating my lunch?
ReplyDeleteI've heard that expression all of my life. I didn't know that it was uncommon.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds vaguely familiar. If I've heard it, it wasn't recently.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard that expression, although I immediately knew what in meant in context.
ReplyDelete(Being gay doesn't actually change your gender.)
That is hilarious! My husband says that ALL the time! =)
ReplyDeleteI don't know that one, but it sounds a bit like it means you're being undermined.
ReplyDeleteNessa, if I were you I would get a lock for the refrigerator. In a way you are lucky because a lot of companies don't provide lunch.
ReplyDelete..
I Googled "eating our lunch" and got About 1,120,000 results (in 0.43 seconds). Do you think you could have misspelled something? Google also informed me that 'mispelled' is one of the top 100 misspelled words.
ReplyDeleteDo you think that 'mispelled' words are eating Google's lunch?
..
Our ten month old granddaughter spent last week with us. Mrs. Jim is at their house helping paint and put dishes back into the China.
ReplyDeleteWe will hate to see them go but I think if they weren't we would have been seeing them too much the last few weeks.
Karen just finished her second week over there (London) on the job.
All of that to say that I sort of know how you were feeling having Buddy (in the South here, that would be 'Bubba') over for his week. I am glad you are now getting around again with the living.
..
I have never heard this. I would have thought it meant someone was taking credit for your stuff or advancing themselves on your energy or had stolen your place.
ReplyDeleteI Googled Vanessa Kilmer:

ReplyDeletePlease help send hugs and good wishes to Viola and Ibok...
thanks a ton!
:)
Well I'm scratching my head. I have no idea...
ReplyDeleteIs that anything like 'the dog ate my homework?' You wrote it so you must know the saying. I hope you will explain.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have heard the phrase and it is used correctly. Basically the other company is taking our market share, they are eating our lunch. I grew up out west so maybe it is a western thing?
ReplyDeleteKat
I have heard this saying as a sports or sales metaphor. When someone is 'eating your lunch' it implies they are doing much better than you....dominating. "My blog today was so poorly written that Nessa's post clearly ate my lunch."
ReplyDeleteMonkey Man's comment is obviously superior to my comment because I didn't write anything. I copied and pasted after a simple search query.
ReplyDeleteNope. Never heard that saying! But I GET it! I totally GET it! I take it some of them didn't... :)
ReplyDeleteWhen is the blog host gonna answer all of these comments?
ReplyDeleteYeap..heard it all my life.
ReplyDeletemaybe because I am in the hospitality industry. LOL
hugs
