A Poem A Day #3 - The Problem with Happiness

"Beryl's Castle"
Photograph by Vanessa V. Kilmer © April 3, 2009

For my dragon loving friends, this is Beryl. He lives on my front porch. He loves the sunshine. He told me he wants a castle like the one I painted on the saw. When we win the lottery.

A Poem A Day - Today's prompt: Take the phrase "The problem with (blank)" and replace the "(blank)" with a word or phrase. Make this the title of your poem and then write a poem to fit with or juxtapose against that title. For instance, you could have poems with the titles of "The problem with government," "The problem with advanced mathematics," or "The problem with bipolar penguins." You know the drill: have fun, be creative.

The Problem with Happiness

Feels
so
damn
good
endorphins
flowing
veins
pulsing
racing
thoughts
sunshine
bright
blue
verdant
wine
lush
body
oasis
only
lasts
as
long
as
an
orgasm.

  1. hat is a collage I guess or a painting? It is beautiful. :) Nice take on the 'problem', Nessa.

  4. I want that saw! Nessa I didn't know you were such a fabulous artist. That castle looks so real up there on the hill, with the greenery on the bank...the perspective is awesome. I forget why you did it on the saw for your friends, but what a great medium. Truly a beautiful work of art. And ha ha ha - my close cousin's name is Beryl :) She is great.

I like what Tom and Icy said - I have trouble living with life and death. Especially death. xo

  5. Very sensuous! But it also strikes me as sad. Interesting.

  6. Okay I'm going to whine some more. Cuz it must be me that I sure don't get all of this out that poem. I had a hard enough time just following the instructions. Can you imagine the happines of a misquito? I bet the dragons are happy for quite some time. Well now that I've totally got you confused...wonderful drawing on the saw. You are like a dentist having to work with such little things and paint something so great. Okay...i'm done now...And I aint even laughing on the floor as much as I really want to be doing now :)

  7. the problrm with blogging while a cat is coiled around your neck purring in your ear and getting fuzz up your nose is that it must be done one handed--one hand supports the cat's rear--no i am not e.e. cummings but i cznnot use the shift very well
    please excuse

  8. The saw is grand! Great painting -- and fast, too! As to the brevity of happiness -- bask in the afterglow!

  9. Beryl is cute and the poem is great. My problem with happiness is that I know it will always end up as disappointment.

  10. Indrani: It is a painting on a two-handed tree saw.

Melli: It’s not quite finished, but it seems to be coming along nicely.

Tom: Very Zen. Opposites make the world go round.

Tsduff: The saw is for my father’s birthday. When I was a child, I always answered the phone and for some reason, the adults calling felt they should tell me who died, so I could tell my mother.

Cherie: The sad part is that happiness is so fleeting and hard to hold on to, especially the harder you try.

Thom: I am on the floor laughing. I love your stream of consciousness comments.

Weirsdo: Holding a pussy’s ass is very important. I understand.

Quilly: Afterglow is a good thing.

Lily: I find the pursuit of contentment more appealing.

    Noe Noe: Thanks.

  11. I thought that was an ode to chocolate. The castle reminds me of Prague.
